Smoke and Reduced Visibility Persist Along South Florida Corridors
Smoke is blanketing parts of South Florida on Sunday, with the Florida Turnpike and Krome Avenue seeing the worst visibility impacts and air quality nearing unhealthy levels.

MIAMI, FLORIDA β Lingering smoke continued to reduce visibility across parts of South Florida on Sunday morning, with conditions slowly improving but remaining hazardous along several major roadways, according to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service Miami office at 9:58 a.m. EDT on June 21.
Affected Roadways
The NWS Miami office identified two corridors facing the worst visibility impacts. The Florida Turnpike from Okeechobee Road to NW 41st Street remains affected, as does Krome Avenue from SW 8th Street to US-27.
Drivers traveling these routes should use caution, as smoke can cause sudden and significant drops in visibility.
Air Quality Concerns
Beyond the driving hazard, the NWS warned that concentrations of fine particulates in the region may approach or exceed levels considered unhealthy. The statement specifically urged people sensitive to fine particulates to take precautions and limit time spent outdoors.
Sensitive groups include the elderly, children, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or heart disease.
Conditions Expected to Improve
The National Weather Service described overall conditions as improving through Sunday morning, though the smoke has been slow to clear from the identified corridors. Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor updated forecasts from NWS Miami as conditions continue to evolve throughout the day.
No cause for the smoke was specified in the NWS statement. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
