GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN β€” The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for four west Michigan counties, warning of dangerous swimming conditions and high wave action expected Friday morning through Friday evening.

The warning affects Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties, where southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph will generate waves reaching 3 to 5 feet in height. The hazardous conditions are expected to begin Friday morning and continue through 11:00 PM Friday evening.

High Risk Areas and Swimming Dangers

Weather officials specifically identified the south sides of south piers as the most dangerous locations for swimmers. Grand Haven State Park and Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon are among the highest-risk areas during the warning period.

Strong currents accompanying the high waves pose significant risks to swimmers, potentially pulling them into deeper water. The elevated wave action also creates dangerous conditions on piers, which may be heavily swamped by the incoming waves.

Safety Warnings for Beachgoers

The National Weather Service warned that high waves can sweep people off piers, creating life-threatening situations. Swimming conditions will be particularly hazardous as the combination of strong currents and elevated wave heights creates multiple dangers for anyone entering the water.

The Beach Hazards Statement was issued at 3:25 PM on Thursday by the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids. Officials emphasized that the dangerous conditions will persist throughout Friday, making it unsafe for recreational water activities along the affected shoreline areas.

Residents and visitors planning beach activities in the four-county region are advised to avoid swimming and exercise extreme caution near piers and breakwaters. The warning covers the entire Lake Michigan shoreline within the affected counties, where the southerly wind direction will drive waves directly toward the shore.
