GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN β€” The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids issued a Flood Watch for eight West Michigan counties, warning residents of potential localized flooding tied to several rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected through Wednesday evening.

The affected counties are Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Jackson. Forecasters said the heaviest rainfall is expected to arrive during the early Wednesday evening hours.

Rainfall Totals and Flooding Risk

According to the National Weather Service Grand Rapids, widespread rain totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible across the region, with isolated locations potentially seeing up to 3 inches of rainfall. The heaviest accumulations are expected especially along the Interstate 94 corridor.

Forecasters warned that localized flooding is possible depending on the exact timing and placement of the heaviest rain bands, with urban areas around Kalamazoo facing a heightened risk. Low-lying streets and drainage systems in densely developed areas are particularly vulnerable during rapid rainfall events.

Travel Impacts Expected During Evening Commute

The National Weather Service specifically cautioned drivers to prepare for travel disruptions during the evening commute on Wednesday, particularly along the I-94 corridor between Kalamazoo and Jackson. Standing water on roadways and reduced visibility are among the hazards motorists may encounter.

Residents in the eight affected counties are encouraged to monitor conditions closely as storm timing may shift. The National Weather Service advised that the latest updates are available at www.weather.gov/grr.

Where to Find Updates

The Flood Watch and any subsequent advisories or warnings are being coordinated through the NWS Grand Rapids office. Forecasters noted that conditions could change rapidly and that the Flood Watch issued separately contains the most current details on flood potential for Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Motorists and residents in Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Jackson counties should avoid flooded roadways and stay informed through official National Weather Service channels at www.weather.gov/grr.
