MIAMI, FLORIDA β€” The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement early Thursday morning warning of near record heat across most of South Florida, with temperatures expected to climb into the lower to mid 90s and heat index values approaching 100 degrees.

The weather statement, issued at 5:01 a.m. by the NWS Miami office, specifically highlighted the east coast metro areas as facing the most extreme conditions. Heat index readings are forecast to reach the upper 90s to near 100 degrees by this afternoon.

Health Risks and Safety Warnings

Weather officials warned that the dangerous temperatures could lead to heat illness or heat stroke for people spending prolonged periods outdoors without adequate cooling, hydration, or appropriate clothing. The combination of near record heat and ample sunshine will cause temperatures to soar rapidly in enclosed spaces without air conditioning.

“If you are planning on being outdoors for extended periods of time, make sure to stay hydrated, wear loose fitted clothing, and take frequent breaks in shade or indoors,” the weather service advised.

Vulnerable Populations at Risk

The National Weather Service emphasized that vulnerable populations face heightened danger during the extreme heat event. Age and certain medical conditions can impact the body’s natural ability to regulate temperature, putting elderly residents and those with health complications at greater risk.

Weather officials issued a critical safety reminder about vehicle safety during the heat wave. “Never leave pets or children in parked cars unattended, always look before you lock,” the statement warned.

Preparation and Safety Measures

Residents are urged to take precautionary measures throughout Thursday as the dangerous heat conditions persist. The weather service recommended staying indoors during peak afternoon hours when possible and ensuring access to air conditioning or cooling centers.

For those who must venture outside, officials stressed the importance of wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Maintaining proper hydration throughout the day remains critical for preventing heat-related illnesses.

The extreme temperatures represent some of the highest readings forecast for the region this early in May, according to the National Weather Service statement.
