GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN β€” A recent survey of Grand Valley State University community members revealed widespread lack of confidence in university leadership, particularly President Philomena Mantella, though university administrators are disputing the credibility of the results.

The informal questionnaire, titled “Community Pulse on Leadership at Grand Valley State University,” collected 460 verified responses from faculty, staff, and students between April 22 and May 2. Approximately 55% of respondents were faculty members, while about 25% were students.

Concerns About Leadership

The survey results painted a stark picture of campus sentiment toward university leadership. Nearly 94% of respondents said Mantella’s actions had decreased morale within the university community over the past year, with only two people indicating morale had increased.

Similarly, around 89% of participants reported that the relationship between Mantella and the university community had deteriorated over the last year, while just three people said it had improved.

Background of Campus Tensions

The survey followed an open letter sent to GVSU administrators in early March expressing concerns about financial decisions and the university’s overall direction. Specific issues raised in the letter included the OMNI initiative, a program combining digital and in-person instruction targeted to adult learners, as well as renovation projects to the Blue Dot lab and Eberhard Center.

The questionnaire addressed whether the University Academic Senate should proceed with a censure vote regarding Mantella, with 79% of respondents supporting such action.

Administration Questions Survey Validity

University administrators have challenged the survey’s credibility, though they have not provided specific details about their concerns with the methodology or results. The questionnaire was distributed via email to verify that responses came from actual GVSU community members.

The survey results highlight ongoing tensions between university leadership and the campus community regarding institutional direction and financial priorities. The University Academic Senate has not yet announced whether it will proceed with a formal censure vote based on these findings.

Grand Valley State University serves thousands of students across multiple campuses in the Grand Rapids area and has faced various administrative challenges in recent years as higher education institutions nationwide grapple with enrollment and financial pressures.
