Flash Flood Watch Issued for West Michigan Dam, Statewide Flooding Possible

HESPERIA, MICHIGAN — A flash flood watch remains in effect through Friday morning for Oceana County as the Hesperia Dam faces potential failure, while broader flood watches cover much of central and southern Michigan due to excessive rainfall and saturated soils.
The National Weather Service Grand Rapids issued the flash flood watch at 7:56 AM Wednesday, warning that dam failure could result in flash flooding of low-lying areas below the Hesperia Dam on the White River. Local officials and emergency management reported water levels remain very high, with water currently flowing over the spillway and threatening to overtop the dam itself.
Additional rain overnight has continued to increase water levels at the dam, according to the weather service. The flash flood watch for the dam failure scenario extends until 8:00 AM Friday.
Statewide Flooding Concerns
Separate flood watches cover portions of central and west central Michigan through late Wednesday night, affecting Clare, Gratiot, Isabella, Mecosta, Montcalm, Osceola, Lake, Mason, Muskegon, and Newaygo counties. The weather service warned that excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Flood watches remain active for south central and southwest Michigan counties including Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Kent, Ottawa, and Van Buren. These watches also extend through late Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service attributed the widespread flooding risk to saturated soils combined with additional rounds of rainfall that continue to create conditions for flooding development. Poor drainage and urban areas face particular risk for flooding impacts.
Officials warned that flooding may occur in areas prone to water accumulation, with excessive runoff expected to affect multiple waterways across the affected regions. The weather service emphasized that residents in flood-prone areas should monitor conditions and be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
The combination of the potential dam failure at Hesperia and widespread rainfall has created multiple flood scenarios across western and central Michigan. Emergency management officials continue monitoring conditions as the weather pattern persists into Thursday morning.
