Fire Weather Watch, High Surf Advisory Hit South Florida Coastline
Fire weather conditions threaten inland South Florida while dangerous 6-8 foot waves and deadly rip currents create hazardous beach conditions through Wednesday.
MIAMI, FLORIDA — Multiple weather alerts are affecting South Florida today as fire weather conditions threaten inland areas while dangerous surf and rip currents pose risks along the Atlantic coastline through Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service Miami issued a Fire Weather Watch at 3:10 AM EDT that remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT today for eight fire weather zones across the region. The alert covers Coastal Collier County, Glades County Lake Region, Hendry County Lakes Region, Big Cypress, Glades County, Hendry County, Northern Collier, and Southwest Collier areas.
Fire weather conditions are expected from 11 AM EDT this morning through this evening, according to the weather service. Northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph will combine with relative humidity as low as 34 percent and temperatures reaching up to 83 degrees.
Coastal Areas Face High Surf and Rip Current Dangers
A High Surf Advisory issued at 2:09 AM EDT affects Coastal Palm Beach County from 2 AM until 8 PM EDT today. Large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet are expected in the surf zone, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions along with localized beach erosion.
Dangerous rip currents are also threatening multiple coastal areas through Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM EDT. The National Weather Service warns that rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The rip current statements affect Coastal Palm Beach County, Coastal Broward County, and Coastal Miami Dade County. These alerts were issued early Tuesday morning at 2:08 AM and 2:09 AM EDT.
