When it comes to male characters, people love them, or love to hate them, or have complicated feelings about them. Male characters run the gamut from Peter Parker to Hannibal Lecter and people have a wide variety of nuanced feelings about them. Female characters though seem to live and die on an arbitrary “likability” factor.

Carol Danvers doesn’t smile? She’s unlikable and so is her film. The wife of an anti-hero doesn’t want him to commit crimes? Unlikable and the clear villain...
