Born William Frederick Durst, or by some records, Frederick Allen Mayne III in August 1970, he is an American rapper, singer, actor, and director. Most people recognize him as the frontman and lyricist of the nu metal band Limp Bizkit. The famous singer has released eight studio albums with the band.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, his family moved to Orlando and then to a farm in Cherryville, North Carolina during his early childhood. He was only one year old when the family moved to the farm. His mother had him rechristened as William Frederick Durst after remarrying Bill Durst, a local police officer.
His parents quickly had another child, his half-brother Cory Durst. When he was in fifth grade, Fred moved to Gastonia, North Carolina. There, he graduated from Hunter Huss High School.

Before forming Limp Bizkit in 1994, he worked multiple odd jobs, including as a landscaper, pizza delivery driver, and tattoo artist. It took him a while to develop an idea about a band combining elements of rock and hip hop.
In 1994, he formed Limp Bizkit alongside Malachi Sage, bassist Sam Rivers, and Rivers’ cousin John Otto. They jammed together and wrote three songs. Then, Wes Borland joined as a guitarist. Durst came up with the name, wanting something that would repel listeners.
The band quickly developed a cult following in the underground music scene, thanks to their covers of Faith by George Michael and Straight Up by Paula Abdul.
In 1997, the band signed with Flip Records, which was a subsidiary of Interscope Records. They released their debut album, titled Three Dollar Bill, Y’all to moderate success.
In the early years, Fred also developed an interest in filmmaking, even directing the music video for the band’s single Faith.
The band reached its highest success with the albums Significant Other in 1999 and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water in 2000.
That success led to the band being invited to the highly anticipated Woodstock ’99 festival. They played in front of approximately 200,000 people. Yet, the concert was tarnished by violent behavior from the crowd, much of which occurred during the performance of Limp Bizkit. Most of the violent stuff happened during the song Break Stuff.
Here is a fun fact, in 2002, Durst signed a deal to write songs for Britney Spears. Later on, he said he was in a relationship with her, but she denied his claims.
In the 2000s, when Limp Bizkit was on a hiatus, Durst began his film career, working in independent films. In 2009, the original lineup of the band reunited and began touring.
