O.C. will spend $70.5 million for permanent housing for homeless; could add temporary homeless shelters in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Laguna Niguel

Supervisors voted today for Orange County to spend $70.5 million on permanent housing for the homeless, and to add temporary homeless camps in Irvine, and possibly in Huntington Beach and Laguna Niguel.

The decision came at a meeting in which supervisors admitted for the first time that they have failed to spend money that’s been available for homeless housing — at least tens of millions of dollars earmarked for mental health funding. Supervisors said they had been misled by county staff...
