NHL’s first black player kicks off celebration

Bruins legend Willie O’Ree, the NHL’s first black player, kicked off a weeklong celebration marking the 60th anniversary of his barrier-shattering professional debut yesterday with an appearance at a youth hockey tournament in Milton.

The Willie O’Ree Invitational Tournament, organized by SCORE Boston, a nonprofit aimed at helping inner-city kids get into hockey, was held at Ulin Memorial Rink and brought together four peewee division teams from Massachusetts and Philadelphia.
