Instead, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In the process of collecting and writing stories packaged as “Tales of the South Pacific,” he won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for fiction – and launched a storied literary career that included “Hawaii,” “Centennial,” “Texas,” “Caribbean,” “Alaska” and others.
