Early signing period forces college football coaches to scramble

The middle of December used to be a time for college football coaches to focus on bowl practices or figure out what high school prospects they really wanted to sign in six weeks.

But there is a new sense of urgency this year as colleges scramble to snare recruits with the early-signing period that begins Wednesday. For the first time, high school football players can sign with colleges before Christmas.
