China Posts Worse-Than-Expected January Trade Figures: Exports Down 11.2%, Imports Plunge 18.8%

SHANGHAI -- China’s trade fell sharply in January, in a further sign of the challenges for the world’s second-largest economy, which last year grew by just 6.9 percent, its slowest pace in a quarter of a century. China’s exports, calculated in yuan terms, fell 6.6 percent last month compared to a year earlier, while imports plunged 14.4 percent year on year, according to data from China’s General Administration of Customs.
