Alexander: Philip Rivers relishing Chargers’ return to Foxborough for another playoff shot

COSTA MESA — The last time Philip Rivers faced the New England Patriots in a postseason game, in Foxborough, his team almost looked like a Spirit of ’76 poster: Fife, drum, flag, crutches, sling … well, you get the point.

Rivers, then 26, played – played – that AFC Championship game on Jan. 20, 2008, with a torn ACL in his right knee. He’d had a procedure earlier in the week to stabilize the knee, and would have a more extensive operation afterward to repair it.
