A single atom visible to the naked eye in this incredible photograph!

Yes, the little blue dot in the middle of this photograph is a simple atom! An incredible image that allowed his photographer David Nadlinger to win the Grand Prize for Scientific Photography organized by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. For this shot entitled Single Atom in an Ion Trap, the photographer managed to capture a single atom of strontium, positively charged and maintained in electric fields between two electrodes spaced less than 2mm.
