KAHOKA, MISSOURI β The National Weather Service issued two tornado watches on June 17 for counties in northeast Missouri and west central Illinois, alerting several communities to potential severe weather.
First Watch Issued Early Morning
Tornado Watch 340 began at 7:52 a.m. CDT, issued by NWS Quad Cities IA IL, covering six counties in Illinois and Missouri. It was set to expire at 3:00 p.m. CDT.
In Illinois, the watch included Bureau and Putnam in north central Illinois, and Hancock and McDonough in west central Illinois. In Missouri, it covered Clark and Scotland counties in the northeast.
The cities under Watch 340 were Carthage, Hennepin, Kahoka, Macomb, Memphis, and Princeton, according to the National Weather Service.
Second Watch Replaces Portion of Initial Alert
Later, NWS Quad Cities IA IL issued Tornado Watch 342 at 2:16 p.m. CDT, replacing part of Watch 340. The updated watch extended until 10:00 p.m. CDT.
Watch 342 focused on Hancock and McDonough counties in west central Illinois and Clark and Scotland counties in northeast Missouri. The cities of Carthage, Kahoka, Macomb, and Memphis remained under the watch.

Residents in multiple communities were advised to stay alert for possible tornadoes throughout June 17. The watches were issued by the NWS Quad Cities IA IL forecast office, serving parts of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri.
