A tornado warning near Currituck was cancelled in under 10 minutes Tuesday, but damaging winds and a severe thunderstorm watch kept the region on alert through the evening.

CURRITUCK, NORTH CAROLINA β€” A tornado warning was issued Tuesday afternoon for an area near Currituck after radar detected rotation in a severe thunderstorm. The threat diminished quickly, and the warning was cancelled before its scheduled expiration.

The National Weather Service office in Wakefield, Virginia issued the tornado warning at 3:59 p.m. EDT on June 23, set to remain in effect until 4:15 p.m. EDT. The warning was cancelled at 4:06 p.m. EDT after the tornado threat eased.

Storm Moving East at 45 mph

At the time of the warning, NWS Wakefield reported a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado located near Currituck, tracking eastward at 45 mph. The storm’s rotation was identified through radar data, not a confirmed ground sighting.

Forecasters warned the storm posed risks including flying debris, damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles, destruction or severe damage to mobile homes, and likely tree damage. The storm was expected to approach Virginia Beach and Knotts Island around 4:05 p.m. EDT. The community of Munden was also identified as a location in the storm’s path.

Severe Thunderstorm Threat Continues

Although the tornado warning was cancelled, NWS Wakefield noted that damaging winds remained likely in the affected area. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remained in effect for the region following the cancellation.

A broader Severe Thunderstorm Watch also remained active until 8:00 p.m. EDT, covering northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents in those areas were advised to remain alert for continued severe weather through the evening hours of June 23.
