Oakland County Prosecutor Launches PAC After Democratic Convention Loss
Following her loss at Michigan’s Democratic convention, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald launches new PAC targeting party divisions over Israel and progressive politics.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN β Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced the formation of a new political action committee after her unsuccessful bid for the Democratic attorney general nomination at the party’s spring convention.
McDonald launched the Common Sense Coalition PAC last week, describing it as an organization that will support candidates who “govern with courage and common sense” and “put reason over noise.”
“Like many of you, I’m frustrated with the state of our politics β a system that increasingly rewards theatrics, purity tests, and extremism instead of integrity, service, and results,” McDonald said in a statement Tuesday. “That’s why I started the Common Sense Coalition PAC β to support leaders who step forward with courage and integrity, make room for everyone, and take the time to meet people where they are.”
Convention Tensions Spark Response
McDonald told Michigan Advance Friday that her decision stemmed from concerns about what she witnessed at the Michigan Democratic Endorsement Convention in April. She described seeing “a very significant attempt to shout down and really bully people from saying what they think.”
The April convention highlighted deep divisions within the party over Israel policy. U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham faced booing from attendees over her support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza against Hamas.
“I have spoken with many, many, many people, particularly people in the Jewish community, who have told me ‘I did not feel safe,'” McDonald said. “There was shouting, there was screaming.”
Progressive Candidates Prevail
The contentious spring convention resulted in victories for several progressive candidates seeking Democratic nominations for November ballot positions. McDonald’s defeat came as part of a broader pattern of progressive wins during the endorsement process.
McDonald previously served as Oakland County Prosecutor and had sought the Democratic nomination to replace Attorney General Dana Nessel this year. Her new PAC aims to support what she calls leaders “who put reason over noise” and prioritize “people above party and politics.”
The Common Sense Coalition PAC represents McDonald’s effort to influence Democratic politics from outside the traditional party structure, focusing on candidates she believes can bridge divides within the party.
