ATLANTA, GEORGIA β€” The National Weather Service issued Heat Advisories for large portions of Georgia on Monday, warning that heat index values could reach up to 112 degrees between noon and 8 p.m. EDT, according to alerts issued Sunday evening by NWS offices in Peachtree City, Georgia, and Tallahassee, Florida.

The advisories affect residents across central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, west central, southeast, and southwest Georgia, covering a broad area during peak afternoon heat hours.

Dangerous Heat Index Values Expected

The NWS Peachtree City office issued two separate Heat Advisories at 8:03 p.m. EDT on June 28. The first advisory warned of heat index values up to 106 degrees, while the second included additional zones with heat index values ranging from 106 to 112 degrees.

A third advisory, issued at 7:55 p.m. EDT June 28 by NWS Tallahassee, extended the heat danger into south central and southwest Georgia, where heat index values up to 110 degrees were expected. That advisory also covered portions of the Florida Big Bend and Panhandle regions.

All three advisories were in effect from noon to 8 p.m. EDT Monday, June 29.

Heat Illness Risk for Residents

Health officials and meteorologists warn that the combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity creates conditions where heat illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, become a significant risk, particularly for those working or spending time outdoors.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces when possible. The elderly, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions face the highest risk during these heat events.

Severe Thunderstorms Struck East Central Georgia Saturday

Before the heat advisory period, severe thunderstorms moved through east central Georgia on June 27, prompting two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings from NWS Peachtree City.

At 2:48 p.m. EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Crawfordville, moving east at 25 mph. That storm carried 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, according to radar-indicated data. Locations in the path of that storm included Crawfordville, Siloam, Sharon, Ficklin, Barnett, Robinson, Lyneville, Alexander Stephens Park, Sandy Cross, and Daniel Springs. The warning was in effect until 3:15 p.m. EDT.

A second Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 3:15 p.m. EDT for north central Warren County, east central Taliaferro County, and southeastern Wilkes County, lasting until 4:00 p.m. EDT. At 3:14 p.m. EDT, the storm was located over Rocky Creek Fire Dept., approximately 8 miles south of Washington, still moving east at 25 mph with 60 mph wind gusts. Locations in the warning area included Sharon, Aonia, Ficklin, Cadley, Lundberg, Rocky Creek Fire Dept., Raytown, and Holliday Park.

Both warnings cited the potential for damage to roofs, siding, and trees, with the earlier storm also posing a hail damage risk to vehicles.
