ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA β€” Democratic House Rep. Lindsay Cross surprised Florida political observers Thursday by announcing she will not seek re-election to her House District 60 seat, which covers parts of St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park in Pinellas County.

The environmental scientist’s decision comes just eight days before the June 12 qualifying deadline for legislative seats, creating a late-cycle scramble for candidates in the district.

In a prepared statement, Cross reflected on her four years representing the district and highlighted her accomplishments during her tenure in the Florida House.

Cross Cites Community Achievements

“I am proud to have brought resources back home to our community to repair infrastructure, improve water quality, create jobs, support the arts, and provide critical programs for hard-working families,” Cross said in her statement. “Working across the aisle, I am also deeply proud of the policies I helped pass to protect our natural environment, increase affordable housing options, and better prepare for and recover from natural disasters, like hurricanes.”

Cross currently serves as the ranking Democratic member of the Housing, Agriculture & Tourism Subcommittee in the Florida House. She explained her decision was made after considerable deliberation.

“However, after much thought and prayer, I have made the difficult decision to not run for re-election during the 2026 election cycle,” she stated.

Immediate Candidate Response

Within hours of Cross’s announcement, Lindsay Polega-Quigley, vice president of the St. Petersburg chapter of the League of Women Voters, filed as a Democrat to run for the vacant seat.

The timing of Cross’s withdrawal creates challenges for both parties in organizing campaigns before next week’s qualifying deadline.

Recent Legislative Positions

Cross’s announcement follows several high-profile votes in the recent legislative session where she broke with the majority. She voted against a sweeping property tax proposal that a supermajority of the Florida Legislature approved to place on the November ballot.

Cross also opposed the state’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget, joining only three other House members in voting against the spending plan.

Her departure removes a Democratic voice from Pinellas County’s legislative delegation as the party works to maintain representation in the competitive region.
