CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI β€” The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for seven counties across southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas Sunday morning, warning residents of potentially dangerous wind conditions expected to persist through the evening.

The advisory, issued at 2:11 a.m. Central Daylight Time, covers Dunklin, Clay, Greene, Craighead, Poinsett, Mississippi, and Pemiscot counties and remains in effect until 7 p.m. today.

Wind Conditions Expected

Southwest winds between 15 to 25 mph are forecast throughout the affected areas, with gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph. The strongest winds are expected from 10 a.m. this morning through 7 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service Memphis office.

The sustained winds combined with strong gusts could create hazardous conditions for drivers, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles such as trucks, RVs, and vehicles towing trailers.

Potential Impacts and Safety Concerns

Officials warn that the gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects, potentially creating safety hazards for residents and motorists. Tree limbs could be blown down across the region, and scattered power outages may result from the high winds.

The National Weather Service advises residents to secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and other loose items that could become projectiles in the strong winds. Residents should also avoid parking vehicles under trees or near structures that could be damaged by falling branches.

Regional Coverage

The wind advisory affects both Missouri and Arkansas counties in the region. In Missouri, Dunklin and Pemiscot counties are included in the warning area. Arkansas counties under the advisory include Clay, Greene, Craighead, Poinsett, and Mississippi counties.

The advisory covers rural and urban areas alike, with cities and towns across the affected counties expected to experience similar wind conditions throughout the day.

Utility companies in the region have been notified of the potential for power outages and are prepared to respond to any service disruptions caused by downed tree limbs or other wind-related damage. Residents experiencing power outages should contact their local utility provider and avoid approaching any downed power lines.

The National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions throughout the day and will update the advisory if conditions change or if the warning period needs to be extended beyond the current 7 p.m. expiration time.
