Trump Administration Finalizes Rule Ending Ohio Childcare Cost Relief
Federal rule eliminating childcare cost relief for thousands of Ohio families takes effect July 13, hitting state’s families hardest in the nation.

COLUMBUS, OHIO β A Trump administration rule eliminating childcare cost relief for thousands of Ohio families became final this week and will take effect July 13, with Ohio families expected to be among the hardest hit in the United States.
The rule cancels assistance that was previously in line to provide financial breaks for Ohio families struggling with massive childcare expenses. The finalization comes as inflation spiked to its highest rate in three years, according to government reports released Tuesday.
Economic Pressures Mount
The childcare rule elimination adds to mounting financial pressures on Ohio families. Gas prices have been inflated by Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran, while massive tariffs levied on trade with most of the world have also contributed to rising costs.
The Trump administration cut $1 trillion in taxes on the richest 1% of Americans last summer while simultaneously cutting health and food benefits for the poor by a similar amount. Trump and Republicans in Congress also allowed healthcare subsidies to expire, which is expected to cost 356,000 Ohioans their health coverage.
Statewide Impact
The childcare rule change affects thousands of Ohio families who were previously eligible for cost relief assistance. The CEO Project, a statewide grassroots organization, has advocated for increased childcare funding, including during National Day Without Child Care events.
The timing of the rule’s implementation creates additional challenges for Ohio families already facing an affordability crisis. The combination of expiring healthcare subsidies, reduced benefits for low-income families, and the elimination of childcare cost relief creates what advocates describe as a perfect storm of financial hardship.
The federal rule was published in the Federal Register and represents a significant shift in childcare policy that will affect families across multiple states, with Ohio families facing particularly severe impacts according to federal projections.
