Frost Advisory Issued for Northeast Missouri and Surrounding Areas
Overnight temperatures could drop into the lower 30s across northeast Missouri and surrounding areas, prompting officials to warn gardeners about potential frost damage.

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI β The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory for portions of northeast Missouri, northwest Illinois, and parts of Iowa, warning residents that overnight temperatures could drop into the lower 30s and potentially damage sensitive vegetation.
The advisory, issued at 8:35 PM CDT on May 1, remains in effect from 1:00 AM to 8:00 AM CDT on Saturday, May 2. The National Weather Service Quad Cities office warned that frost formation is expected as temperatures fall to as low as the lower 30s during the early morning hours.
Areas Affected
The frost advisory covers portions of northwest Illinois, east central, northeast, and southeast Iowa, along with northeast Missouri. The unusual late-season cold snap comes during what is typically a warmer period in early May.
According to the National Weather Service, frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation during the advisory period. Officials specifically warned that sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered during the overnight hours.
Precautions for Gardeners
The weather service advises residents to take protective measures for vulnerable plants and gardens. Covering sensitive vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors can help prevent frost damage.
The advisory affects areas where many residents may have already planted their spring gardens or flowers, assuming the threat of frost had passed for the season. This late-season frost warning serves as a reminder that temperature fluctuations can occur even in May.
Temperatures are expected to rise after 8:00 AM Saturday morning when the advisory expires. The National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions and issue updates if the forecast changes or if additional areas become affected.
