Florida Legislature Passes $114.5 Billion Budget Despite Democratic Criticism
Florida lawmakers approved a $114.5 billion state budget Friday despite Democratic criticism of tax cuts they say favor special interests over everyday residents.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA β The Florida Legislature approved a $114.5 billion budget Friday afternoon, with the House voting 99-6 and the Senate voting unanimously to pass the spending plan that will guide state operations from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
The budget passage came despite concerns from some legislators that the plan falls short of adequately funding schools, healthcare, and environmental programs. Democrats particularly criticized a nearly $300 million tax cut package, arguing it benefits special interests more than everyday Floridians.
Tax Cut Package Sparks Debate
Democratic legislators expressed frustration that the tax reduction package includes savings for gun accessories, including silencers, while failing to include a suspension of state gas taxes. Governor Ron DeSantis had previously embraced gas tax suspensions in October 2022 but did not pursue them this year.
Republican legislative leaders defended the budget, arguing it funds essential state needs while reducing overall spending compared to the previous fiscal year. “Floridians expect their government to spend responsibly and prioritize the issues that matter most to families across our state,” House Speaker Daniel PΓ©rez said in a written statement following the vote.
Notable Budget Allocations
The spending plan includes several significant allocations beyond traditional state operations. The budget earmarks $4 million for compensation to the Groveland Four, addressing a historic civil rights case.
Another $50 million is designated to help the Tampa Bay Rays construct a new stadium near Hillsborough College. The budget also includes $250 million for an emergency fund overseen by DeSantis, which he has previously used for immigration enforcement activities.
The budget covers spending guidelines for public schools, higher education, healthcare, criminal justice, and environmental programs across Florida’s state government operations.
