Fire Danger Warning Issued for Metro Atlanta as Humidity Drops Sunday
Humidity will drop to 30% or less for four hours Sunday, creating dangerous fire conditions across metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA β The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of high fire danger conditions across the Atlanta metro area Sunday afternoon and evening as humidity levels are expected to drop significantly.
Relative humidity is forecast to fall to 30 percent or less for four or more hours Sunday afternoon into the evening, according to the weather statement issued at 10:02 p.m. Friday by the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City. Winds are expected to remain light, ranging from west at 3 to 8 mph.
Elevated Fire Risk Expected
The combination of low humidity and dry fuels across the region will create high fire danger conditions throughout Sunday. Weather officials emphasized that the dry conditions pose a significant risk for outdoor burning activities.
Residents planning any outdoor burning activities are advised to contact their local burn permitting authorities before proceeding. The weather service stressed that anyone who does burn outside should use extreme caution during these hazardous conditions.
Safety Precautions Recommended
The dry atmospheric conditions expected Sunday mirror patterns that have contributed to wildfire outbreaks in other regions during similar weather patterns. Fire officials typically recommend avoiding any outdoor burning during periods when humidity drops below 30 percent for extended periods.
Local fire departments often increase readiness during such conditions, as small fires can spread rapidly when humidity levels remain low for several hours. The light winds forecast for Sunday may provide some relief compared to higher wind conditions that can dramatically accelerate fire spread.
Sunday’s weather conditions represent a temporary spike in fire danger, with humidity levels expected to return to more normal ranges early next week. However, residents should remain vigilant about fire safety practices, particularly when disposing of cigarettes or conducting any activities that could produce sparks.
The National Weather Service continues monitoring atmospheric conditions across north Georgia and will issue additional warnings if fire danger conditions persist or worsen beyond Sunday evening.
