OKEECHOBEE, FLORIDA β€” The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement early Wednesday morning warning of dense fog conditions developing across portions of Okeechobee County, with visibility reduced to less than one mile in some areas.

The advisory was issued at 6:38 a.m. EDT by the NWS Melbourne office after satellite imagery, traffic cameras, and surface observations indicated patchy dense fog was occurring or developing throughout the region.

Driving Conditions and Safety Warnings

Weather officials are urging motorists to exercise caution when traveling through affected areas. The sudden onset of dense fog can create hazardous driving conditions as visibility changes rapidly.

The National Weather Service recommends drivers encountering foggy conditions should slow down and increase their following distance behind other vehicles. Officials also stress using low-beam headlights rather than high beams, which can reflect off fog and further reduce visibility.

Fog Formation and Current Conditions

The dense fog formation comes as weather patterns create conditions for reduced visibility across central Florida. Surface observations from the area show the fog patches are developing unevenly, meaning drivers may experience sudden changes from clear conditions to severely limited visibility.

Traffic cameras positioned throughout Okeechobee County are providing real-time monitoring of the fog conditions to help weather officials track the movement and intensity of the weather event. The monitoring systems allow meteorologists to issue updated guidance as conditions change throughout the morning hours.

Residents and commuters should remain alert for additional weather statements as conditions develop. The fog advisory remains in effect as weather officials continue monitoring satellite data and surface conditions across the region.
