Dangerous Rip Currents, Flooding Hit Florida’s Big Bend Region
Rip currents threaten swimmers along Big Bend beaches while heavy rainfall causes flooding in Gadsden and Leon counties.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA β The National Weather Service issued multiple weather warnings for Florida’s Big Bend region on Friday, alerting residents to dangerous rip currents along Gulf Coast beaches and flooding conditions in inland counties.
A rip current statement remains in effect until 1:00 AM EDT Saturday for beaches in Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties. The weather service warned that dangerous rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Meanwhile, flooding caused by excessive rainfall prompted a separate advisory for Gadsden and Leon counties, which was set to expire at 12:15 AM EDT Saturday.
Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding Advisory
Doppler radar and automated rain gauges detected heavy rain from thunderstorms at 10:22 PM EDT Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen across the advisory area.
Meteorologists predicted an additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall would result in minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Specific locations expected to experience flooding include Lake Talquin, Fort Braden, and Bloxham.
Beach Safety Warnings in Effect
The rip current statement, issued at 3:34 AM EDT Friday, covers a broad stretch of the Big Bend coastline. Weather officials emphasized that rip currents pose a significant threat to swimmers and beachgoers regardless of their swimming ability.
Both weather advisories highlight the challenges facing the region, with coastal areas dealing with dangerous water conditions while inland communities manage flooding from heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions and may extend or modify warnings as weather patterns develop.
Residents in affected areas are advised to avoid flooded roadways and stay out of ocean waters where rip currents are present.
