NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE β€” Tennessee Republican lawmakers have enacted more than a dozen pieces of immigration legislation during this year’s legislative session, creating what GOP leaders describe as a national model for state-level immigration enforcement.

The Republican supermajority approved measures largely along party lines that impose new immigration verification, reporting, and enforcement responsibilities on state and local law enforcement officers, public health providers, government social workers, and drivers license issuers.

Among the approved measures are bills making illegal immigration a state crime, forcing sheriffs into cooperative agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and penalizing truck drivers who don’t speak fluent English. A proposal requiring student immigration status data-gathering at public schools did not pass this year.

Healthcare Workers Face New Reporting Requirements

Republican Rep. Dennis Powers of Jacksboro defended legislation that would leave public health workers vulnerable to criminal prosecution for not reporting patients without legal status. The bill awaits Governor Bill Lee’s signature.

“We welcome legal immigrants, but if they come here illegally, then they need to go back,” Powers said during debate last week. “They can get $1,000 and a plane ticket home. If they have an emergency situation, they will be treated and released, and then whoever treats them for the emergency has to report at the end of the month that, hey, we treated an illegal person, and that person has a right to go home.”

Trump Administration Collaboration

Tennessee Republicans have drawn a hard line on illegal immigration, mirroring the rhetoric of the Trump administration, which worked with GOP lawmakers to craft the package of bills. State Republican leaders announced their “Immigration 2026” agenda in January during a press conference featuring White House advisor and Trump administration mass deportation architect Stephen Miller.

The legislative package represents one of the most comprehensive state-level immigration enforcement efforts in the country, according to Republican leaders who unveiled the agenda at the beginning of this year’s session.

Enforcement Expansion

The approved legislation significantly expands immigration enforcement responsibilities beyond federal agencies to include local and state officials across multiple sectors. Law enforcement officers, healthcare providers, social workers, and motor vehicle department employees will now bear new obligations under the enacted measures.

The bills reflect Tennessee’s alignment with federal immigration priorities under the current administration, with Republican lawmakers positioning the state as a leader in immigration enforcement efforts nationwide.

Most of the bills introduced as part of the “Immigration 2026” agenda have received approval from the GOP-controlled Tennessee General Assembly, demonstrating the party’s unified approach to the issue.
