RFK Jr. Defends Budget Cuts as Democrats Display Hot Tub Photo at Hearing
HHS Secretary RFK Jr. faced harsh questioning as Democrats displayed a poster of him shirtless in a hot tub with Kid Rock during a heated budget hearing.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers Thursday during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing where representatives displayed a poster showing him shirtless in a hot tub with Kid Rock while questioning his commitment to nutrition programs.
Kennedy testified that he opposed spending cuts to federal food assistance programs, despite the Trump administration’s budget proposal targeting these initiatives. The hearing grew heated when California Democratic Rep. Linda T. Sánchez displayed the poster showing Kennedy drinking milk in a hot tub with the musician.
Secretary Distances Himself From Budget Cuts
“Am I happy about the cuts? No, I’m not happy about the cuts,” Kennedy said during the hearing, which was one of several congressional panels he is scheduled to testify before in coming days. Kennedy argued the proposed reductions would undermine his efforts to promote healthy eating habits among Americans.
The HHS secretary claimed that President Donald Trump and White House budget director Russ Vought also didn’t truly want to propose funding cuts to key nutrition programs. The cuts would affect the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, commonly known as WIC, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
Democrats Question Administration Priorities
Democratic committee members used the hearing to highlight what they characterized as contradictions between Kennedy’s public health messaging and his personal activities. The poster display included Illinois Democratic Rep. Danny K. Davis, Alabama Democratic Rep. Terri A. Sewell, and Washington Democratic Rep. Suzan K. DelBene alongside Sánchez.
The lawmakers suggested Kennedy’s lifestyle choices, as depicted in social media posts, conflicted with his role overseeing federal nutrition and health programs that serve millions of lower-income Americans. The hot tub photo became a focal point for Democratic criticism of the administration’s approach to public health policy.
Broader Budget Battle Context
The hearing comes as Congress debates the Trump administration’s budget proposals, which include significant reductions to social safety net programs. SNAP and WIC serve millions of American families, providing food assistance to pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and low-income households.
Kennedy’s testimony highlighted tensions within the administration over budget priorities, as he publicly distanced himself from cuts that would directly impact programs under his department’s oversight. The secretary’s comments suggested internal disagreement about the scope and necessity of proposed reductions to nutrition assistance programs.
The Ways and Means Committee hearing represents the first of multiple congressional appearances Kennedy will make this week as lawmakers examine the administration’s health and social services priorities. Republicans on the committee have not yet responded to the Democratic criticisms raised during Thursday’s session.
