COLUMBUS, OHIO β€” Ohio voters will head to the polls on May 5 for the state’s primary election, with officials releasing a comprehensive candidate guide to help residents prepare for the upcoming races.

The Ohio Capital Journal published a voter guide covering all races and candidates for the 2026 primary election. Statehouse reporter Morgan Trau compiled the guide and continues to update it with additional candidate information as it becomes available.

Voters who notice missing candidates can contact Trau at morgan.trau@wews.com with the subject line “2026 PRIMARY GUIDE UPDATE” to ensure comprehensive coverage of all races.

Open Primary System Allows Flexibility

Ohio operates under a partisan but open primary system, which means voters do not need to register with a specific political party before election day. The state officially recognizes three parties: Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians.

Unaffiliated voters retain the option to participate in nonpartisan ballot questions and local issues, even if they choose not to vote in party-specific races. This system provides flexibility for Ohio residents who prefer not to align with a particular political party.

Not All Races Feature Competition

Election officials note that competitive primary races vary across the state, with some candidates running unopposed in their respective parties. The absence of primary opponents in certain races means some candidates will advance directly to the general election without facing intraparty competition.

The voter guide provides details on contested races, candidate backgrounds, and key issues facing Ohio voters in the upcoming primary. The resource aims to help residents make informed decisions when they cast their ballots next week.

Ohio’s primary election serves as the first step in determining which candidates will appear on the general election ballot later this year. The results will influence the political scene for various state and local offices across Ohio.
