RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of elevated wildfire risk across much of northeast North Carolina. A mix of low humidity, dry fuels, and gusty northwest winds is creating dangerous fire conditions Monday afternoon.
The weather service office in Wakefield, Virginia issued the alert at 5:00 PM EDT on April 19, citing relative humidity values dropping to 20 to 30 percent as the primary concern. These conditions, combined with existing dry vegetation, create the potential for rapid fire spread across the affected region.
Statewide Burn Ban in Effect
A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains in effect, making open burning of any kind illegal. This measure aims to prevent human-caused fires during the heightened risk period.
Weather service meteorologists warned that any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly under current atmospheric conditions. The gusty northwest winds are expected to fuel rapid fire growth if ignition sources encounter the region’s dried vegetation.
