NC State Names Alumnus Justin Gainey as New Men’s Basketball Coach

RALEIGH — NC State officially introduced former Wolfpack point guard Justin Gainey as the program’s new men’s basketball coach Wednesday, marking the return of a beloved alumnus to lead his alma mater.
Gainey, 42, becomes the 21st head coach in NC State basketball history after spending several seasons as an assistant coach at various programs. The announcement follows an extensive search after the departure of the previous coaching staff.
“This is truly a dream come true,” Gainey said during his introductory press conference at Reynolds Coliseum. “NC State has always been home for me, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead this program forward.”
From Player to Coach
Gainey played point guard for the Wolfpack from 2000 to 2004, helping guide the team through several successful seasons. During his playing career, he was known for his leadership on the court and his understanding of the game.
After his playing days ended, Gainey transitioned into coaching, working his way up through various assistant coaching positions. His coaching experience includes stops at multiple programs where he developed a reputation for player development and recruiting.
University Leadership Confident in Choice
NC State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan expressed confidence in the hiring decision, citing Gainey’s deep connection to the program and his coaching experience.
“Justin brings a unique combination of passion for NC State and proven coaching ability,” Corrigan said. “His understanding of what it means to be a Wolfpack student-athlete, combined with his coaching expertise, makes him the right leader for our program.”
University officials noted that Gainey’s familiarity with the program’s culture and traditions played a significant role in their decision. His experience as both a player and coach gives him insight into the challenges facing the program.
Looking Ahead
Gainey inherits a program looking to return to national prominence. The Wolfpack has faced challenges in recent seasons, and supporters hope the new coach can bring stability and success back to Reynolds Coliseum.
“We have great facilities, tremendous support from our fans, and a rich basketball tradition,” Gainey said. “My goal is to build a program that our alumni, students, and fans can be proud of.”
The new coach emphasized his commitment to recruiting quality student-athletes who can succeed both on the court and in the classroom. He also stressed the importance of building relationships within the local basketball community.
Gainey will officially begin his duties immediately as he prepares for the upcoming season. His first priority will be assembling a coaching staff and evaluating the current roster while also focusing on recruiting efforts.
The hiring represents a homecoming for Gainey, who has maintained strong ties to the Triangle area throughout his coaching career. Local basketball observers have praised the selection, noting his knowledge of the region’s talent pool.
