Metro Atlanta Under Fire Weather Warning as Dry Conditions Persist
National Weather Service warns of dangerous wildfire conditions Thursday as humidity drops below 25% and winds gust up to 20 mph across metro Atlanta.
ATLANTA, GEORGIA — The National Weather Service has issued multiple special weather statements warning of dangerous fire conditions across metro Atlanta and surrounding areas, with extremely low humidity levels and dry vegetation creating an elevated wildfire risk.
Officials from the NWS Peachtree City office issued a statement Tuesday evening warning that relative humidity levels will drop to 25 percent or below for at least four hours Thursday afternoon and evening. The combination of these dry conditions with northeast to southeast winds of 7 to 12 mph, gusting up to 20 mph, creates hazardous fire weather conditions.
“With dry fuels, high fire danger conditions can be expected,” according to the weather service statement issued at 9:07 p.m. Tuesday.
Widespread Dry Conditions Across Region
The fire weather threat extends beyond metro Atlanta into parts of South Carolina and Georgia. The NWS Greenville-Spartanburg office reported that dry brush and leaf litter have become extremely dry in recent days due to breezy conditions and low relative humidity.
“These conditions are forecast again Thursday. Relative humidity will fall below 25 percent for much of the afternoon,” officials said in their statement issued at 9:28 p.m. Tuesday. “Given the dry vegetation, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started, increasing the danger of wildfires.”
In coastal areas, conditions are equally concerning. The Charleston weather service office warned that northeast winds will frequently gust to around 20 to 25 mph with relative humidity values dropping to around 20 to 30 percent throughout the afternoon.
Burn Restrictions and Safety Warnings
Weather service officials are urging residents to check with local burn permitting authorities before conducting any outdoor burning activities. The combination of gusty winds, low humidity, and extremely dry fuels has created an elevated risk for wildfires across much of the region.
“If you do burn outside, use extreme caution,” the Peachtree City weather office advised. Officials warn that fires can quickly get out of hand under the current conditions.
The weather service emphasized that anyone planning outdoor burning should exercise extreme caution, as fires can spread rapidly once started due to the dry vegetation and atmospheric conditions.
