RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — A section of Interstate 87 near Knightdale will shut down overnight Sunday into Monday as construction crews advance work on the Complete 540 Project, transportation officials announced.

The closure will affect I-87 between Smithfield Road and Hodge Road from 9 p.m. Sunday, April 6, through 5 a.m. Monday, April 7, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Detour Routes Available

During the closure, drivers will need to use alternate routes to navigate around the work zone. NCDOT officials said motorists should expect delays and plan extra travel time for their Monday morning commute.

The overnight timing was chosen to minimize disruption to weekday traffic patterns, transportation officials said. The work is a significant phase in the ongoing Complete 540 Project construction.

Complete 540 Project Progress

The closure is part of the extensive Complete 540 Project, which aims to finish the remaining segments of the Triangle Expressway around the Raleigh area. The project has been underway for several years as crews work to connect existing portions of the highway system.

Construction teams will use the overnight closure to perform specialized work that requires complete roadway access, according to NCDOT. Officials did not specify the exact nature of the construction activities planned during the closure period.

Traffic Impact and Planning

The affected stretch of I-87 serves as a major corridor for commuters traveling between eastern Wake County communities and the greater Raleigh area. Transportation officials urged drivers to identify alternative routes before Sunday evening.

Local traffic on cross streets may also experience increased volume as drivers seek detour options around the closure. NCDOT advised motorists to check real-time traffic conditions and consider adjusting departure times for Monday morning travel.

Weather conditions could potentially affect the construction schedule, though officials said the work would proceed as planned unless severe conditions develop. The closure is one of several planned overnight work sessions as the Complete 540 Project continues toward completion.

Drivers can access current traffic information and construction updates through NCDOT’s website and mobile applications. Officials said additional overnight closures may be scheduled as construction progresses on the remaining segments of the Complete 540 Project.
