GM Invests $300M in Romulus Plant as Part of $6B National Manufacturing Push
GM commits $300M to Romulus facility producing truck and SUV components, part of massive $6B investment in U.S. manufacturing operations.

ROMULUS, MICHIGAN β General Motors announced a $300 million investment in its Romulus Propulsion Systems facility Wednesday as part of a $6 billion nationwide manufacturing expansion aimed at increasing production capacity and supporting American jobs.
The Romulus plant, which employs approximately 1,000 workers, will use the funding to boost production capacity for full-size trucks and SUVs. This marks the second major investment in the facility within months, following another $300 million allocation late last year.
The investment is part of GM’s broader $6 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing operations, with $830 million specifically targeted toward propulsion and engine-related facilities across the country.
Regional Impact and Political Support
State Senator Darrin Camilleri praised the investment for the region’s automotive heritage and economic stability. “As the automotive capital of the world, building cars is in the lifeblood of our Downriver and Western Wayne communities,” Camilleri said in a statement.
“It is essential to our region’s well-being that our Big 3 manufacturers continue to invest in our state and support our union workforce,” the Trenton Democrat added.
Statewide Manufacturing Investments
Michigan will benefit from additional GM investments beyond the Romulus facility. The automaker plans to invest $150 million in the Saginaw Metal Casting Operations plant to support production of next-generation full-size pickup trucks and Corvettes.
Outside Michigan, GM will allocate $80 million to the Toledo Propulsion Systems facility in Ohio to increase capacity for 10-speed transmissions used in light-duty trucks.
According to GM officials, the comprehensive investment strategy focuses on strengthening the company’s U.S. manufacturing footprint while enhancing production capabilities across multiple facilities. The move represents the automaker’s continued commitment to domestic manufacturing operations amid evolving industry demands.
The Romulus facility’s role in producing components for GM’s full-size truck and SUV lineup positions it as a key element in the company’s manufacturing network. The plant’s strategic importance has grown as consumer demand for larger vehicles remains strong in the American market.
