Flood Advisory Issued for Upper Keys as Heavy Rain Triggers Minor Flooding
Heavy thunderstorms dump up to 3 inches of rain across Ocean Reef and North Key Largo, prompting flood advisory as drainage systems overflow.

KEY LARGO, FLORIDA β The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for portions of the Upper Keys on Sunday evening as heavy rainfall from thunderstorms caused minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The advisory, issued at 7:08 p.m. EDT on April 20, remained in effect until 8:30 p.m. EDT as Doppler radar detected ongoing heavy rain across the region.
Between 2 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen by the time the advisory was issued, with an additional 1 to 2 inches expected throughout the evening. The excessive rainfall triggered minor flooding in areas with poor drainage systems.
Affected Areas
Ocean Reef and North Key Largo were specifically identified as locations experiencing or expected to experience flooding conditions. The flooding primarily affected low-lying areas and locations with inadequate drainage infrastructure.
Officials warned that the additional rainfall would result in continued minor flooding as drainage systems struggled to handle the volume of water. Overflowing drainage areas posed the primary concern for residents and motorists in the affected zones.
Weather Conditions
The flooding resulted from thunderstorms that moved through the Upper Keys during the evening hours. Meteorologists used Doppler radar technology to track the storm systems and monitor rainfall accumulation across the region.
The National Weather Service emphasized that while the flooding was classified as minor, residents should exercise caution when traveling through areas with standing water. Poor drainage areas remained particularly vulnerable to additional water accumulation.
Safety Recommendations
Weather officials directed residents to flood safety information available at weather.gov/safety/flood for guidance during the advisory period. The advisory system allows meteorologists to alert communities when weather conditions pose potential risks to public safety.
The flood advisory serves as a precautionary measure to inform residents about developing weather conditions that could impact daily activities and transportation. Local emergency management officials monitor such advisories to coordinate response efforts if conditions worsen.
