SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA β€” The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday afternoon warning residents across upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina about dangerous fire weather conditions due to extremely dry vegetation and low humidity levels.

The alert, issued at 1:02 p.m. EDT by the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg office, cautioned that fine fuels remain very dry following several days without rainfall and persistently low relative humidity. Meteorologists warned that relative humidity values are expected to drop below 25 percent again this afternoon and evening.

Rapid Fire Spread Expected

“Given the dry vegetation, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started,” the weather service stated in its alert. The combination of drought conditions and low humidity creates ideal circumstances for fires to ignite and spread rapidly, even with light wind conditions forecast for the region.

Weather officials emphasized that any outdoor fires started under these conditions could quickly escalate beyond control. The dry fine fuels, which include grasses, leaves, and small twigs, act as kindling that can easily catch fire and help flames spread to larger vegetation.

Burn Permit Guidance Issued

The National Weather Service advised residents to check with local burn permitting authorities before conducting any outdoor burning activities. “Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today,” the statement read.

For those who receive permission to burn, officials stressed the need for extreme caution. “If you do burn, use extreme caution as fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions,” the weather service warned.

Regional Impact

The weather statement covers areas served by the Greenville-Spartanburg forecast office, which includes portions of upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina. This region has experienced below-normal precipitation in recent days, contributing to the current fire weather concerns.

Local fire departments and emergency management agencies typically coordinate with the National Weather Service during periods of elevated fire danger to ensure adequate resources are available for rapid response. The dry conditions are expected to persist through Thursday evening, maintaining the heightened fire risk across the affected areas.

Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning activities and to report any signs of wildfire immediately to local emergency services. The weather service continues to monitor conditions and may issue additional alerts if fire weather conditions worsen or expand to other areas.
