http://sampada.net/article/11841

 •  Learn Kannada Programme -
Sent: 26
Subject: Kannada kali karyakrama - January 6 kke

Snehitare,
Banavasi Balaga is organizing an event on  Kannada Kali on 6th of January at Indian Institute of World Culture, Bengaluru.

"Kannada Kali" is a program to teach Kannada to non-kannadigas across IT/BT companies in Bengaluru. It was first conceived at Infosys, Bengaluru and owing to the enormous response it got from Non-Kannadigas as well as Volunteers ( who wished to take such an initiative in their organisation), it rapidly spread out to atleast 30 IT companies in Bengaluru. It works in 2 models:

1. Volunteer based
2. Volunteer anchored and supported by a Trainer

A interesting out come of Kannada Kali at work place is that, it facilitates group learning, addresses the limited time issue for a person., acts as a stress buster for both trainers and trainees, and above all one can experience a "mini-India" in the class room .

Articles on Kannada kali:

Kannada Kali's website:

So, how does Kannada kali work? What about course ware? How can we start this in your organizations? What about support?? How does it benefit your organization?  We'll answer all your querries in the event we have planned.

For a better perspective, I cordially invite you to the Event on 6th of January at Indian Institute of World Culture, B.P.Wadia Road, BasavanaGudi, Bengaluru. An invitation with road map will be sent in a day or two. I request you to mark your calendar and make a visit to the event and share a memorable experience with us over a cup of Coffee.

Please pass this information to your fellow kannadiga friends working in different companies.

Note: This is open for all and not just for people working in IT.

 •  Indic languages and the computer /internet
Namaskara yellarigu, modalnedaage..ee post na full english nall maadtiddenni..just copy/paste from the post in Bangalore community adakke..matte yella kannadadalli type maadakke swalpa bore aithu plus swalp kelse ide..dont mind!:-)

Hi All,

As the penetration of internet increases in India we are seeing more and more people using the indic/regional languages to communicate apart from english.

There are a lot of challenges around using Indic languages on computers/over the internet.

We have a session in Barcamp Bangalore 5, to discuss the same.
(To know more about what a Barcamp is , check out www.barcampbangalore.org )

This collective's focus is to highlight some of the efforts that are going on currently to promote the Indic languages and to get ideas on how to increase the reach of the same.

A few pointers in that direction would be :

- The resources available currently.
- How do we promote the usage of Indic languages ?
- Localization of the tools/web pages we use.
- Localization efforts in Open Source. How do you participate ?
- Blogging in regional languages in India.
- How effective is it to communicate in regional languages ? and what makes it interesting ?
- What would make it easier ?
- How transliteration tools work ? How to build them ?
- Indic languages on mobiles

Would like to have more ideas on the same.

Requesting all those interested in Indic languages and computing , to participate.

You can follow the discussion at http://barcampbangalore.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=333#333.

To find out how to participate check out www.barcampbangalore.org .

If you have any questions please mail me at vinay.sreenivasa@yahoo.com or praveengarlapati@gmail.com  .
You can also call me at 91-98805-95032.

Thanks,
Vinay.

 •  Kannada in MediaWiki?
Namaskara Yellarigu.

Ee naduve Mediawiki is being used in a lot of places, to set-up a wiki. Aadre, Mediawiki does not support any Indian langugae directly/through Baraha etc. It would be great to get Mediawiki to support Local Indian languages especially if we need to capture a lot of localized content.

I've posted a query in MediaWiki's tech mailing list asking how we can get that done.

Meanwhile, neev yaaradru ee vishayada bagge swalpa reasearch maadidre/yenaadru action thagondiddre, adanna illi post maadi.

Thanks!
Vinay.

 •  Singari - Kannada literary magazine
(I posted this to my blog yesterday. Hope it's ok to repost here.)

My mom has spent the last couple of months in bringing out an online Kannada magazine called Singari, where she and some friends want to put up literature related articles every month. Check it out if this piques your interest.
It's still very early stages so there's tackiness all around. Feel free to give feedback.

I have read only a couple of the articles there so I can't speak about the content itself. Hopefully you'll find something of interest. Or tell people you know who might like it ;) Though it's taglined as a literary magazine, I was surprised to see lots of other stuff.

On the technical side, a lot of the initial work was done by Mr.Subramanya of Kannada Ganaka Parishat, including a decision to use Flash which eliminated all font problems. Recently I pitched in to simplify the file structure, added a comments and feedback form using JS-Kit. Moving the content to GooglePages gave a huge speed boost.

Interestingly, there's another Kannada literary mag called Gelathi which launched in April.

 •  podcasting .....

A friend of mine gave this idea of interviewing interesting people ,right from literary persons , directors , to people like autodrivers ( thay are philosophers in their own way) and upload it on the net . we need suggestions both technical and otherwise in this matter .  it would be encouraging to get  few inputs.

 •  kannada community ...
if you carefully look at the journal entries ,  the frequency is less .
this reflects the state of the language . in my last entry i had said that it is us who can do something for the language . instead of looking at somebody like the state to bring out policies to save kannada , lets be pragmatic and do little things at the personal level.

hope more and more bloggers bring out issues that affect the state , its people and its language .this community should become  forum for  meaningful discussions and debates .
people can postfilm/book reviews etc ...   KAVI SHYLA,  KUPPALLI

 •  is kannada a dyinig language ?

is kannada a dyinig language ?

this question has often troubled me over the past few years. on one end of the spectrum we have kannada activists who are tarnishing english hoardings and on the other hand we have people who are nt bothered about the state of the language . infact, many are ashamed of their kannada identity. in the era of gobalisation where there are sweeping changes all around , language is not spared. it has to adopt or perish .......

                     how to adopt ?
#computers are ruling the world . e governance is the order of the day . kannada should be the medium of all  e-gov initiatives
(NOW we have BHOOMI etc in ENGLISH). it should be made software friendly . Late Poornachandra Tejaswi also had this concern (was attemptng to find something with the help of some engineers).

#economics drives the world. the language will live until it gets you money i.e. employment . avenues should found out to do some thing in this regard.

Late GP Rajarathnam(who incidently was a Tamilian) said this
                                                " narakakils'i nalige seelsi
                                                                 bayi hols-hakidroo
                                                                        moognalli kannada padavadthini"
wonderful sentiments !

.kannada activists cannot save kannada . it is us, who can do it .it has been living for the past 2000 years .it cannot die like that ....any way lots to be done .............

 •  Kannada Blogs
Just drop by for a chat — An article from The Hindu about the state of Kannada blogging.
Unlike their English counterparts, Kannada blogs are of recent origin and very limited in numbers. This is perhaps why you stumble upon the same names in discussions forums. While one could call this a limitation, this very limitation also creates the warmth of community. You see here a camaraderie that you rarely find in the vast ocean of English blogs.

Also, because it's a new space free of the conventions guiding strictly "literary" forums, there is a new variety in the voices you hear. For instance, while the blog of a well-known critic like O.L.N. Swamy offer some erudite articles on literature and the dynamics of language growth, the debates it generates make for exceptionally interesting reading. The observations of M.S. Sriram, an established writer and a professor at the Indian Institute of Management, on the issue of hybrid identities also leads to many discussions. Arguing that narrowing down Kannada identity is counter-productive, he writes: "The search for a Kannada identity is like peeling an onion. If we go on excluding layers, we will be left with nothing but tears."

Press demand for according classical status to Kannada
According to the Tamil scholar Iravata Mahadevan, influence of Kannada can be found in the Tamil inscriptions of 200 BC to 100 BC.

The words "Ghata sapta shahi" were found in a Greek drama written in 200 AD. A full-bodied Kannada text is found in the Halmidi Inscription of 450 AD. Over 30,000 Kannada inscriptions found were dated after that period.

"Though `Kavirajamarga', dated 900 AD, was the first book, several samples of Kannada prose and poetry that were older were available. Pampa, the great poet, began a new literary tradition by writing his works in `Champu' style," he said.

 •  The kannaDiga identity - first shot at expressing a sea of thoughts
Cross posted from LJ Bangalore, vinay_ks avara korikeya merege.

----
Even though I have been a reader of LJ-Bangalore for a while, I've never actively participated. But, in the aftermath of responses to my post, I'm surprised at the range of emotions and especially the lack of Kannadiga-kannadiga voice in this forum. I'll try to address that lacunae.

I'm a kannaDiga by birth. I was born and brought up in Bangalore. I chose to study in a Kannada medium school till 8th standard when, at the age of Five, my father gave me a choice to select my medium of instruction . I grew up reading kuvempu's philosophy of "vishvamaanavata vaada"(universal humanism). He famously said, you can be a kannaDiga even when you are not in karnataka. If you are climbing Alps, that is your sahyadri; the water of Mississippi is your kaveri. Generations of kannaDigas outgrew the shackles of casteism, and other "traditions" by reading his works.

While this was true for people with letters, unlettered people got that message from Rajkumar. People who have to come to Bangalore recently fail to understand all the ruckus and sometime even misunderstand Rajkumar as the one who incites mobs against non-kannadigas. They could not have been more mistaken. It was Rajkumar who carried the message of "nava-bharatha" and later "nava-karnataka" to the corners of Karnataka. Go and watch "bangarada manushya"(lit. Man of Gold), where Rajkumar plays the role of a educated son returning to his village to fight the casteism not by throwing blood around but by bringing in education, technology and good-will. That was a path breaking statement for people who were torn between the old and the new.

Rajkumar himself was from the caste of "eeDigaru (toddy-tappers)" (an OBC in government-speak). In a country where, even after 58 years of Independence, casteism still rules in parts of India, kannaDigas of all castes and creeds accepted Rajkumar as their elder brother. If Karnataka is far ahead of many states in India in social equality, attribute some, if not all, of that to Rajkumar. This alone shows his service to karnataka and India.
Enough about Rajkumar. I'll write about more about him, when emotions on both sides have cooled down.

Yesterday, I visited the heritage sites of talakaaDu and somanathapura. See photos below.
talakaaDu was the capital of the earliest kannada kings - the Gangas [c350 AD].

more here

Somanathapura temple is an exemplary example of Hoysala art.

Even though this trip was planned long before Raj's death, it allowed me to get away from the emotion filled bangalore and take a look inside myself - what is kannada, who are we and more importantly where we want to go from here.

We are a people who have a "recorded" history of nearly 2000 years. We have always been a race of brave and tolerant people. For a race which once ruled India upto the Ganges, we are remarkably non-aggressive. In fact, the earliest kannaDa inscription talks of KannaDigas of being "paradharma sahishNutaru"(tolerant towards others).Karnataka is a place where many religions and hindu revivalist movements have grown. If there is one single quality that distinguishes kannada rulers from others, it has been religious tolerance. Whether it was Rashtrakutas towards Bhuddism or Gangas towards Jainism or later hoysalas towards advaita philosophy(Hindu revival) , or Tippoo sultan towards Hinduism, they have left a tradition which is remarkable. The social equality movement started in Karnataka in the 11th century AD with basavaNNa.

I would also take this context to remind that this quality of kannada and kannaDigas which made many like masti venkatesha iyengar (gnanapeeth awardee) , AK Ramanujam [Tamil], Govinda Pai,Girish Karnad [Konkani] and many others to adopt kannada to do their literary work over their mother tongues.

KannaDa and karnataka has always been a creator and not just a consumer in arts, literature, culture and religion. Today, it angers me and a lot of educated kannDigas when people lump us with rest of South India and call "madrasis" or some such inane word.

This history lesson has a context. When the present moment appears too close to the skin, it is time to look back and look into the future. As Siddhartha, the founder of Fireflies said the other day, "You have to be like a bow; the more you draw your arrow towards yourself, farther your arrow can fly".

While a part of me wants to blame all "outsiders" for "misusing" the hospitality of kannaDigas, my history and culture does not allow me to wallow in self-pity.

Dr. Raj's death brought me out of my self-enforced silence and made me evaluate what a kannadiga should be. Perhaps, it is not surprising that Rajkumar himself gave me a way out of it. I'm talking of Mayura Varma, the founder of the first Kannada kingdom - the Kadambas . He was a brahmin who chose to become a warrior to avenge an insult to a peace loving, non-violent student - himself. The first kannada kingdom took shape to give "swabhimaana"(self respect) to kannadigas. Rajkumar played the role of Mayura in the eponymous movie - Mayura.

But, Rajkumar, true to his image of all things kannadiga, downplayed the "avenger" part and chose to use his role to tell us what "being a kannadiga" means. Read this , this , and this review for a scholarly analysis of that movie.

I dont want kannaDigas to take up arms, like Mayura Varma did, but to introspect and find strength in the fact that we have done well, without being nasty or conscending of other people. We can be the race other people look up to rediscover qualities of humanity, tolerance, creativity and more importantly humility.

 •  In our tongue
In our tongue — An article in The Hindu about the Kannada Wikipedia and the upcoming Kannada Wiki meet in Bangalore.

The Kannada enterprise began when Hari Prasad Nadig, a freelance software developer hailing from Shimoga, became a sys-op with Wikipedia and took it upon himself to create a Kannada component to the portal. The first entry was on Kuvempu, the Kannada literary genius from his home district. Slowly others joined in and the number of active contributors now stands at about 15, many of them NRIs. There are now an impressive 1,270 entries in Kannada now.

Wiki volunteers feel that now is a good time to rope in more people into the enterprise and also help sort out technical and editing problems faced by those who are already in it. So the Kannada Wiki family is meeting the coming Sunday at Nayana Auditorium. "We need more people with good language skills," says Nadig.
